2027 UCR Fees by Fleet Size

Official 2027 UCR fees start at $55 and run to $54,165, based on fleet size. Your bracket is based on the number of vehicles you own or operate. The table below shows the official 2027 fee, our separate filing fee, and the total when Truckers Authority handles the registration.

Vehicles Total you pay Breakdown
0–2 $105 $55 official + $50 filing
3–5 $242 $167 official + $75 filing
6–20 $408 $333 official + $75 filing
21–100 $1,283 $1,163 official + $120 filing
101–1,000 $5,892 $5,548 official + $344 filing
1,001+ Call (866) 858-7172

The official fee goes to the UCR Plan and is the same wherever you file, including when you file yourself through the official portal. Our filing fee is separate and covers us doing the registration for you. Fleets with more than 1,000 vehicles should call (866) 858-7172.

Why 2027 UCR Fees Are 20% Higher Than 2026

The 2027 increase averages 20%. FMCSA’s final rule says the higher fees cover a $21.79 million shortfall in statutorily required funding. The new fee schedule takes effect October 1, 2026.

Vehicles 2026 2027 Increase
0–2 $46 $55 +$9
3–5 $138 $167 +$29
6–20 $276 $333 +$57
21–100 $963 $1,163 +$200
101–1,000 $4,592 $5,548 +$956
1,001+ $44,836 $54,165 +$9,329

The table shows the 2026 fee, 2027 fee, and increase for each bracket.

Brokers, Freight Forwarders and Leasing Companies

Brokers, freight forwarders, and leasing companies with no vehicles pay the 0–2 vehicle bracket. For 2027, the official fee is $55. Businesses with no power units still register under the lowest bracket.

Renew Your UCR for 2027

UCR registration is annual. Each year, you renew using the business information tied to your USDOT number, your base state, and the fleet size that places you in the correct fee bracket.

For 2027, the registration window opens October 1, 2026. Filing early in the window gives you more time to catch and correct a vehicle count before the deadline if something is wrong. That matters because your fee bracket is based on that count.

The process stays familiar, but the registration year and fee schedule can change. For 2027, the fees are higher than 2026, so your amount may change even if your fleet stays the same size. You can file directly or hand the renewal to us.

Registration Opens October 1, 2026 and Is Due Before January 1, 2027

The 2027 registration period opens October 1, 2026. Registration and payment must be complete before January 1, 2027. There is no official pre-registration period and no UCR Plan early discount. Any early offer you see before the portal opens is a private company’s promotion, not a UCR Plan rule.

Signed Up for NRS Auto-Renew? Check Your Vehicle Count First

If you enrolled in the NRS Auto-Renew Program, check the power-unit count on your most recent MCS-150 before the charge runs. Auto-Renew uses that number to place you in a UCR fee bracket. An outdated count can make you overpay or underpay, and under-paying creates audit exposure.

If you operated in 2026 and never filed your 2026 UCR, that fee is still owed. You can file the missing registration late using the same basic process. Start by checking which registration year is missing, then complete that year separately from your 2027 filing.

Who Has to File UCR, and Who Is Exempt

If you operate commercial vehicles in interstate commerce, you generally file UCR.

STILL REQUIRED
Vehicles 10,000 lbs GVWR or under
Vehicles seating 10 or fewer
Hauling only your own property
Based in a non-participating state
NOT REQUIRED
Private carriers of passengers
Intrastate-only operations
Solely within Hawaii
Federal government vehicles
Emergency vehicles only

Private carriers of passengers means churches, schools, and businesses transporting their own employees. A carrier primarily engaged in intrastate school-bus operations may exempt its intrastate school buses from the fleet count. If your operation falls outside these specific exemptions, UCR applies.

Based in a Non-Participating State? You Still File

Forty-one states participate in the UCR Plan. If your state is not one of them, you still register through a base state. Your filing route changes, but the UCR requirement remains for an operation that is otherwise subject to registration.

How UCR Filing Works With Truckers Authority

We keep the filing simple.

Our filing fee is separate from the official UCR fee, so you can see exactly what goes to the UCR Plan and what you pay us to handle.

What You Need Before You Start

Have your USDOT number, vehicle count, and base state ready. Those are the core details we need to start the filing. If you use NRS Auto-Renew, the power-unit count on your most recent MCS-150 is especially important because that number drives the automatic fee bracket.

Is UCR Registration Legitimate? How to Tell ucr.gov From a Filing Service

Yes. UCR is a real federal registration program, and ucr.gov is the only official UCR portal. You can file it yourself there. The official UCR fee is the same either way. A private filing service charges separately for doing the registration for you.

That difference should be clear before you pay anyone. A filing service should separate the official UCR fee from its service fee.

Be cautious with sites that avoid naming ucr.gov, show one total without explaining which part is official, or advertise an official early discount. The UCR Plan has no early discount and no official pre-registration period. A private company may offer its own promotion, but that is separate from UCR Plan rules.

What Happens If You Miss the UCR Deadline

To continue operating legally for a registration year, an operation subject to UCR must complete the registration and pay the fee before January 1. After January 1, the fee is still due, and a non-registrant may face state enforcement action.

If you missed the deadline, the next step is straightforward: identify the missing registration year and complete the filing. There is no need to guess at a penalty amount or wait for a notice before fixing the registration.

How to Check Your UCR Status

Not sure whether your UCR is current? Send us your USDOT number and we will check it for you and tell you which registration years are complete.

One thing worth knowing: a completed 2026 registration only confirms that year. Your 2027 registration needs its own filing. If the year you need is missing, that fee is still owed.

What UCR Is, and How It Differs From MCS-150, IRP and Your USDOT Number

UCR is an annual registration tied to interstate operations. Your fleet size places you in a fee bracket for that registration year.

MCS-150 carries company and power-unit information tied to your USDOT record. That information can affect UCR, especially with Auto-Renew, but it is a separate filing.

IRP covers apportioned vehicle registration. UCR is a different annual registration and fee.

Your USDOT number identifies your federal motor carrier record. UCR uses that record as part of the filing but remains its own annual registration.

Questions About UCR Registration

What most of our clients ask

Is UCR mandatory?

Yes, if your operation is subject to UCR. Interstate commercial vehicle operations generally register each year. Specific exemptions include certain private passenger carriers, intrastate-only operations, operations solely within Hawaii, vehicles solely owned or operated by the federal government, and emergency-vehicle-only operations. If none of those fits your operation, plan on filing.

Do I need to renew my UCR every year?

Yes. UCR is an annual registration. Each registration year has its own filing period and fee schedule, so you renew for the new year even if your business details stayed the same. The amount due depends on the fee bracket that applies to your fleet for that registration year.

How long is UCR registration good for?

UCR registration applies to one registration year. Once that year ends, you renew for the next one. For 2027, the registration period opens October 1, 2026, and the registration and payment must be completed before January 1, 2027. A new annual filing is required for the next registration year.

Can I file my UCR online?

Yes. UCR registration can be completed online. You can handle the filing yourself through the official system or use a filing service to do it for you. If you use a service, the service fee is separate from the official UCR fee set for your fleet-size bracket.

Can I file my UCR myself?

Yes. You can complete your own UCR registration at ucr.gov. The official UCR fee is the same whether you file it yourself or use a filing service. If Truckers Authority handles it, our filing fee is listed separately from the official fee so you can see exactly what you are paying for.

What is the difference between UCR and FMCSA?

UCR is the annual registration program covered on this page. FMCSA is the federal agency connected to motor carrier oversight and the final rule that set the 2027 UCR fee schedule. They are related, but they are not the same thing. UCR has its own annual registration process and fee.

What is the deadline for UCR registration?

For the 2027 registration year, registration opens October 1, 2026, and registration and payment must be complete before January 1, 2027. That deadline matters because an operation subject to UCR must be registered and paid before January 1 to continue operating legally for that registration year.

Is UCR registration the same as MCS-150?

No. UCR is an annual registration with a fee based on fleet size. MCS-150 contains company and power-unit information tied to your USDOT record. The two filings serve different purposes. Your MCS-150 information can affect your UCR fee bracket, especially if you are enrolled in NRS Auto-Renew.
