How to get your apportioned plates in California

In California, apportioned plates, also known as IRP (International Registration Plan) plates, are required for commercial vehicles that operate in more than one state and have a gross weight of over 26,000 pounds.

Here's the process for obtaining apportioned plates in California:

  1. Register your business with the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and obtain a California Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) certificate.
  2. Obtain an IRP account with the California DMV. You can apply for an IRP account online, by mail, or in person at a California DMV office.
  3. Submit the necessary documentation, including proof of insurance, proof of ownership or lease of the vehicle, and a completed IRP application.
  4. Pay the necessary fees. These include registration fees, apportionment fees, and any additional fees that may be required by the California DMV.
  5. Once your application is approved, you will receive your apportioned plates, which must be displayed on the vehicle as required by law.
  6. Keep in mind that Apportioned plates are required to be renewed annually, and fees for renewal are based on the distance traveled in each state.
  7. It is important to keep track of your miles traveled in each state and report it to the California DMV. Failure to do so may result in fines or penalties.

It’s important to keep in mind that regulations and requirements for apportioned plates may vary from state to state, so it’s best to check with the specific state’s department of transportation for more information.
